"Neofytos" Cultural (Disability) Organization invites artists to participate in the exhibition ‘’Dis’’, which is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts.

The exhibition ‘Dis’ aims to approach Disability based on its social interpretation model, namely the imposition of peripheral and social constraints on the action of Humans with Disabilities. According to the social model, disability is the result of the way people think about it and the social importance they attach to it. According to this approach, disability is caused by specific social and political practices.

​

Through this perspective, artists and audience will have the opportunity to understand disability differently, to reflect on it, to revise their established perceptions of it and to come to terms with a contemporary social issue that is affecting much of our society. The aim of the exhibition is to create contemporary works of art that will develop critical thinking and raise awareness through disability.

​

The confinement was the reason for the creation of "Neofytos". For people with disabilities, confinement is a permanent condition and not temporary, as we all experienced with the pandemic. People with disabilities are not among us, they are restricted at home, isolated, excluded from society. Their exclusion from social interaction often leads to psychological reactions. Some of them live in isolation not for 30 or 60 days, not for three or six months, but for decades.

 

In the case of people with disabilities, these restrictions are not by choice, thus enforcing a society that ignores them and abandons them. So, now that we have all experienced this confinement, we do not need the testimony of people with disabilities in order to be able to visualize this experience. The theme of the Art Exhibition focuses on the social exclusion and everything that revolves around it: isolation, loneliness, lack of communication, lack of contact, lack of action. "Neofytos" was created to fight social exclusion of people with disabilities.

This call is for artists - members of Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts. If you are a member of Neofytos but not a member of Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts and you wish to participate in the exhibition, "Neofytos" will cover all your registration fees, after specific procedures of acceptance by the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts.
