Spatial Intelligibility

Μια άλλη διάσταση της προσβασιμότητας · Another Dimension of Accessibility

English

The research expands accessibility beyond functional compliance. Access is not only the ability to enter a building, but also the ability to understand and navigate it autonomously.

Nicosia General Hospital is used as a case study. The analysis considers spatial configuration, routes, spatial depth and how architectural organisation shapes the user's experience.

Core proposition

Spatial understanding is a prerequisite for autonomy.

Why it matters

The study argues for an architectural understanding of accessibility that includes orientation, intelligibility and lived experience, rather than limiting accessibility to ramps, pavements or parking spaces.

Archive note. This page is a web presentation of the bilingual Neofytos research document supplied for the archive. The original document identifies Nicosia General Hospital as the case study and includes diagrams and photographic material of the building and its circulation spaces.
